Types of badminton tournaments in BC
- Junior series (A, B and C). Badminton BC’s junior circuits, from the C series up to the top-level A series. Junior B results count toward qualifying for the BC Junior B Provincials.
- Open series. Adult events split into skill levels, such as Open A and Open B.
- Masters series. Age-group events for players 30 and over.
- Collegiate series. Events for college and university players.
- Club and community opens. Tournaments run by local clubs, like Shuttle Storm ’26. They make a good first tournament: you enter by age group, and everyone in an event with three or more entries plays at least two matches.
How to find and enter a tournament
- Check the Badminton BC event calendar. Badminton BC says registration links usually appear about four to five weeks before each event.
- Open the event page and read the eligibility rules, categories and entry deadline.
- Find a doubles partner early. Most events close entries several days before play.
- Register and pay online, then watch for the draw, which is usually posted a day or two before play.
What a tournament day looks like
Most tournaments follow the same rhythm, whether it is a Badminton BC series event or a club open:
- The draw comes first. Organisers post draws and start times shortly before the event. Small events often play a round robin, so everyone meets everyone; larger ones use an elimination draw.
- Matches are called, not scheduled to the minute. Times move with the results. Stay near the court and listen for your name: at Shuttle Storm, a player who is not on court within 10 minutes of being called loses by default.
- Scoring is rally scoring. Every rally wins a point, under the BWF Laws of Badminton. Some events shorten matches to fit the day; Shuttle Storm plays single games to 21 through the quarter-finals, then best of three games to 15.
- You won’t play all day. Expect gaps between matches. Bring water, food and a warm layer, and warm up again before each match.
- Gear. Non-marking indoor court shoes are required at most venues. Protective eyewear is a good idea, especially in doubles.
