Abbotsford Recreation Centre (ARC): drop-in badminton

ARC, at 2499 McMillan Road, has two full-size gymnasiums and is the City of Abbotsford’s home for drop-in badminton. The City’s drop-in schedule listed these badminton sessions for late October and November 2026:

The City describes these as doubles sessions: players rotate, and games are timed at 12 minutes. Spots are reserved online through the City’s booking system, and booking opens roughly 25 hours before each session. When we checked, the Sunday 18+ session was already full, so book as soon as it opens. Holiday weeks differ: no Open Badminton was listed on November 11.

Prices. The ARC Gymnasium page lists single drop-in admission, effective September 1, 2026, at $9.65 for ages 25–64, $4.35 for ages 5–24 and $5.10 for 65+. A City Rec Pass covers drop-ins at ARC and Matsqui Recreation Centre, and 10- and 20-session passes are sold. The City’s pages don’t say whether racquets or shuttles are supplied, so bring your own.

Matsqui Recreation Centre (MRC)

Matsqui Recreation Centre, at 3106 Clearbrook Road, does not list a gymnasium. The City’s facilities page lists its rink, pool and fitness centre, and the drop-in schedule shows no badminton there. For City badminton, go to ARC.

UFV Campus Recreation

The University of the Fraser Valley runs an organized co-ed badminton drop-in on Thursdays from 4:00 to 8:00 pm in the North Gym (Building E) on the Abbotsford campus. Student staff organize the games, and all skill levels are welcome. The UFV schedule lists sessions through December 10, with none on November 12.

This drop-in is mainly for the UFV community. UFV Campus Recreation says drop-in sports are for UFV students, staff, faculty and alumni. Public guests must come with a current UFV student or employee and be at least 17, unless they come with a parent or guardian. Entry is free with a Campus Rec membership. Without one, a day pass costs $5.25 for UFV students, $7 for employees and alumni, and $10 for guests, plus tax. Check in at the Client Service Desk (E150) when you arrive; members sign in with their Campus Card.

Abbotsford Badminton Club

The Abbotsford Badminton Club is the place for strong players who want good, regular games. It plays Monday and Thursday evenings from 8:00 to 10:00 pm at Abbotsford Middle School, 33231 Bevan Avenue, from October 1, 2026 to May 31, 2027. Use the southwest gym door, nearest the parking lot.

Play days and cancellations are on the club’s calendar; ask about joining through its contact page.

Can you book a badminton court by the hour?

Not one court at a time, as far as we could find in Abbotsford: ARC sessions are booked per person. A regular group can rent an ARC gym by the hour. The City’s 2026 price list (effective September 1, 2026, taxes extra) shows:

The City’s Bookings & Rentals page doesn’t give a gym request form, so contact Parks, Recreation & Culture at 604-859-3134 or prcoffice@abbotsford.ca. Rental requests aren’t final until City staff confirm them.

The closest single-court rental we could confirm is in Langley City. Timms Community Centre (20399 Douglas Crescent) rents six courts on Sunday evenings, 5:30–6:15 pm and 6:30–7:15 pm, at $11 per court, for ages 16 and up. Book through Langley City’s online registration; Timms’ phone number is 604-514-2940.

Nearby: Cheam Leisure Centre, Chilliwack

If you live in east Abbotsford, Cheam Leisure Centre (45501 Market Way, Chilliwack, run by the YMCA) has drop-in badminton for ages 13+ in the full gym. Its fall 2026 gym schedule (September 8 to December 20) lists Sundays from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm, plus a Friday evening session whose time isn’t printed, so call 604-824-0231 to check. An adult drop-in costs $6.91.
